Still, cleaner video than VHS tape, but the disc is marred by serious audio problems from time to time. Doyle and Brett bios are laughably minimal and contain some incorrect data. Okay value for price. |

| Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace (1962) Stars: Christopher Lee (Sherlock Holmes) and Thorley Walters (Dr. Watson) 86 minutes Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Black & White, Mono Sound Full-screen format Review Notes: All actors, including Christopher Lee and Thorley Walters, are dubbed into English by other voice actors. DVD image and audio quality is mediocre at best and the image is missing information at top of screen. For more on-site information on this film and Christopher Lee as Holmes, click here. Okay value for price. |
| The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) Stars: Peter Cushing (Sherlock Holmes) and Andre Morell (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, Mono Sound Theatrical trailer Featurette - Actor's Notebook: Christopher Lee (2002, 12 min.) Hound of the Baskervilles excerpts read by Christopher Lee over illustrations by Sydney Paget Widescreen letterbox format (1.66:1) Review Notes: First rate DVD package! Beautiful widescreen video transfer, although colors appear slightly muted, with solid mono soundtrack. Lee's on-screen interview is a delightful bonus as he discusses the film and his co-star Peter Cushing, although his separate HOUN reading is mediocre at best. Highly recommended, great value for price. |
| The Hound of the Baskervilles (1983) Stars: Ian Richardson (Sherlock Holmes) and Donald Churchill (Dr. Watson) All Region - NTSC Color, Mono Sound Full-screen format Review Notes: Bare bones package that contains a reasonable quality transfer. Likely as good as any transfer based on a video source (some grain present). Slight improvement over vhs release. Recommended as this is still good value for the price and it is doubtful that a better release will ever turn up. |
| The Sign of Four (1983) Stars: Ian Richardson (Sherlock Holmes) and David Healy (Dr. Watson) All Region - NTSC Color, Mono Sound Liner notes by "Scarlet Street" magazine's Richard Valley Full-screen format Review Notes: Bare bones package that contains a reasonable quality transfer. Likely as good as any transfer based on a video source (some grain present). Slight improvement over vhs release. Entertaining and informative liner notes by Richard Valley. Recommended as this is still good value for the price and it is doubtful that a better release will ever turn up. |
| The Seven-Per-Cent Solution (1976) Stars: Nicol Williamson (Sherlock Holmes), Robert Duvall (Dr. Watson) and Alan Arkin Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, Mono Sound Full-screen format Review Notes: Bare bones package that contains a reasonable quality transfer. Definite improvement over vhs release in terms of image clarity, color and sound. While I doubt it will ever happen, this film deserves a fully restored widescreen release. Recommended as this is still a major improvement over the vhs release. Okay value for price, but this DVD is disappearing from retailers and will rapidly become scarce. |
| The Hound of the Baskervilles (Russian/English Subtitles) (1981) Stars: Vasily Livanov (Sherlock Holmes) and Vitaly Solomin (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, Dolby Stereo Sound Full-screen format English subtitles Review Notes: Until recently, this was a rarity in any form, but more so in a subtitled version. First rate image and sound quality that is a vast improvement over previous vhs versions. Highly Recommended as this is great value for price. For on-site information on the Russian Sherlock Holmes series click here. More Russian episodes below. |
| They Might Be Giants (1971) Stars: George C. Scott (Justin Playfair) and Joanne Woodward (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, Widescreen Commentary by director Anthony Harvey and film archivist Robert A. Harris Theatrical trailer(s) Features 10 minutes of footage not seen in the original theatrical release Featurette: Madness...It's Beautiful (8 min.) Widescreen anamorphic format Review Notes: A great transfer with excellent audio and video quality and some extras. This was the first Sherlock Holmes related DVD release to take full advantage of the format. Highly Recommended as this is great value for price. |

| Sherlock Hound: Case File 1 (1983) Includes 5 episodes: The Four Signatures, The Crown of Mazalin, A Small Client, Mrs. Hudson is Taken Hostage, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Animated, Color English and Japanese Mono Audio (2-sided disc) Review Notes: Digitally remastered bright and clean transfer. Double-sided as the English language versions run approx. 1 minute longer per episode. Recommended for completists only. Poor value for price as these are ridiculously expensive. Currently five volumes are available. |

Marion Crawford (Dr. Watson) Includes 10 episodes: The Case of the Eiffel Tower, TCOT Jolly Hangman, TCOT Cunningham Inheritance, TCOT Diamond Tooth, TCOT Neurotic Detective, TCOT Red-Headed League, TCOT Vanished Detective, The Night-Train Riddle, TCOT Pennsylvania Gun, TCOT Baker Street Bachelors Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Black & White, Mono Sound Full-screen format On-screen intros by Christopher Lee (although they have nothing to do with this series) Review Notes: Run-of-the-mill transfer from poor quality video masters, exactly the same as Madacy's previous video set. Image and audio quality ranges from episode to episode. Note: A complete 39 episode release is due in late 2004 |
| The Hound of the Baskervilles (2002) Stars: Richard Roxburgh (Sherlock Holmes) and Ian Hart (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound 'Making of' featurette and Interviews Widescreen letterbox format (1.85:1) Review Notes: Beautifully produced DVD with excellent image and sound quality. On-site review of the Canadian broadcast version is here. Recommended as this is a prime example of a first-rate DVD release, even if you don't care for the film itself. |
| Murder By Decree (1979) Stars: Christopher Plummer (Sherlock Holmes) and James Mason (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, Widescreen Audio commentary with co-producer/director Bob Clark Review Notes: Released to DVD on January 21, 2003. Brighter image quality than any previous video version, although displaying some grain. Audio commentary with Clark is a bit thin, but still informative. Recommended as it is a great film that finally received a decent release. Reasonable value for price. |
| Young Sherlock Holmes: The Manor House Mystery (3 Disc Set) (1982) Stars: Guy Henry (Sherlock Holmes) 260 minutes Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color Full-screen format Review Notes: Not to be confused with the big-screen Young Sherlock Holmes, this thoughtful 8-part television series produced by Granada in the UK in 1982 made it's home video/DVD debut in January 2003. Reasonable print but otherwise bare-bones package. Recommended as this is good value for an excellent, if little-seen, Holmes series. |

Fair value. |
| The Last Vampyre (1992) Stars: Jeremy Brett (Sherlock Holmes) and Edward Hardwicke (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, HiFi Sound Elcock's Drawings Feature Length Presentation Full-screen format Review Notes: Best looking of the Granada/MPI releases. |
| The Sign of Four (1987) Stars: Jeremy Brett (Sherlock Holmes) and Edward Hardwicke (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, HiFi Sound Gutschmidt's Drawings Feature Length Presentation Full-screen format Review Notes: Mediocre print with fairly soft details. A pity, considering this was shot on 35mm rather than video. Fair value. |
| The Eligible Bachelor (1992) Stars: Jeremy Brett (Sherlock Holmes) and Edward Hardwicke (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, HiFi Sound Feature Length Presentation Full-screen format Review Notes: As with the other more recent films in the Granada series, decent print and sound quality. | Murder at the Baskervilles AKA Silver Blaze (1936) Stars: Arthur Wontner (Sherlock Holmes) and Ian Fleming (Dr. Watson) Region 0 encoding (Worldwide) Black & White, Mono Sound Full-screen format Review Notes: Alpha Video PD release with a transfer from a video source that looks no better than VHS and suffers from wobbly sound values. Great cover art for a relatively uncommon and worthwhile film. Recommended as this retails for under $10 USD and there will likely never be a 'quality' DVD release for this title. |

| A Study in Scarlet (1933) Stars: Reginald Owen (Sherlock Holmes) and Warburton Gamble (Dr. Watson) Region 0 encoding (Worldwide) Black & White, Mono Sound Full-screen format Review Notes: Released to DVD on March 18, 2003. Produced by Alpha Video which is not known for high quality. Badly framed video transfer that often cuts off heads, otherwise just like my old vhs copy. Great cover art. Recommended as this retails for under $10 USD and there will likely never be a 'quality' DVD release for this title. |

| Sherlock: Case of Evil (2002) Stars: James D'Arcy (Sherlock Holmes) and Roger Morlidge (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, Dolby Digital 2.0 Sound Widescreen format Review Notes: No notes at this time. Released to DVD November 18, 2003. Rather odd made-for-television film featuring a youthful Sherlock Holmes' early encounter with Prof. Moriarty. Features Vincent D'Onofrio as Moriarty and Richard E. Grant as Mycroft. For further on-site info regarding this production, click here. |
| Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) Stars: Nicholas Rowe (Sherlock Holmes) and Alan Cox (Watson) 109 minutes Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color Widescreen format Review Notes: Released on December 2, 2003. | Doctor Who: The Talons of Weng-Chiang (1977) Stars: Tom Baker (The Doctor) and Louise Jameson (Leela) 140 minutes Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color Commentary track featuring Louise Jameson (Leela), John Bennett (Li H'sen Chang) and Christopher Benjamin (Henry Gordon Jago) with producer Philip Hinchcliffe and director David Maloney Also features various featurettes, trailers, production notes, etc... Full-screen format Review Notes: Released to DVD on October 7, 2003. The BBC's cult classic character Doctor Who, ably assisted by Leela and the Watson-like Dr. Litefoot, runs up against a Fu Manchu inspired villain in Victorian London. A classic Doctor Who adventure in an excellent package. Recommended. |
| John Cleese - The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It (1978) Stars: John Cleese (Arthur Sherlock Holmes) and Arthur Lowe (Dr. Watson) Region 0 encoding (Worldwide) Color, HiFi Sound Full-screen format Review Notes: A truly abysmal print of an equally abysmal parody film. Horribly dated and not the least bit funny. Painful waste of the talented cast. Not Recommended as this is likely the single worst transfer I've ever seen on the DVD format although the source print is the real culprit. For completists only! |
| The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes (1986) Stars: Christopher Lee (Host/Narrator) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, HiFi Sound Full-screen format Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Biography and Selected Works Sherlock Holmes...In His Own Words Trivia, Interactive Menus and Scene Selection DVD Rom - Text to HOUN, SIGN, STUD, Adventures, Memoirs and Casebook Bonus Movie: Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (Rathbone/Bruce) Review Notes: A documentary examining the many actors to have portrayed Sherlock Holmes on screen. Christopher Lee narrates from the recreation of 221B at the Sherlock Holmes pub in London. Recommended as this is a reasonable video survey of the topic. |

| Sherlock Holmes Collection Review Notes: The image and sound quality of the newly restored Sherlock Holmes Collection is simply without peer, so never again need we endure blobby white faces mumbling from within a murky sea of grey in poor public domain releases! Sharp definition of blacks and gray scales are the hallmark of these beautiful prints. Clean and resonant sound has been restored so that we can truly appreciate the clipped tones and rapid-fire delivery that went into making Basil Rathbone the definitive Sherlock Holmes of his generation. The Extras: While the individual releases of the Universal films have no extras whatsoever, the 3 boxed sets do. Not exactly Loaded with extras as the packaging proclaims, there is still much here to make these boxed sets the way to go when purchasing these films. Each of the 3 sets features one film with full-length audio commentary by Sherlockian film scholar David Stuart Davies (see individual set listings above for specifics). Davies chatty and informative commentaries are great fun for both the knowledgeable Sherlockian film buff or novice alike. Vol. 2 features a short intro by Robert Gitt of UCLA Film and Television Archive on the restoration process. Vol. 3 has a somewhat shoddy excerpt of the Fox/Movietone interview with Conan Doyle. Each boxed set also includes rather weak photo and poster galleries. Of the extras in the boxed sets, the most rewarding extra features are likely the three 16-page booklets (one for each set) with 12 pages in each devoted to film specific and general production notes by Richard Valley (editor of Scarlet Street magazine). He has included a wealth of relevant biographical data on the leads, repeat players and character actors as well as outlining fascinating links between the Holmes series and the Universal horror cycle of the 1940s. Valley's insightful and amusing notes provide the perfect backdrop to a better understanding of the rich context within which these films were made. Bottom Line: Highly Recommended - Ignore all other previous releases of the Rathbone/Bruce series on DVD, as these boxed sets from MPI provide the very best in terms of quality and value. |
| Without a Clue (1988) Stars: Michael Caine (Reginald Kincaid/Sherlock Holmes) and Ben Kingsley (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color Full-screen format Trailer Review Notes: Released March 2, 2004. | Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: The Real Sherlock Holmes (2004) All Region DVD Color, HiFi Sound Full-screen format Bonus Radio Play: The Adventure of the Devil's Foot (Rathbone/Bruce) Review Notes: A documentary examining the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Includes much modern footage of places relevant to Doyle's life including Edinburgh, Portsmouth, Windlesham, etc..as well as relevant Sherlockian sites such as Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes pub, etc... Overall a good basic introductory video biography of Sherlock Holmes' creator. Recommended as this is a reasonable video survey of the topic for $6.99. |
| Hands of a Murderer (1990) Stars: Edward Woodward (Sherlock Holmes) and John Hillerman (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (USA and Canada only) Color, HiFi Sound Full-screen format Review Notes: None at this time, although, considering it is a fairly awful tele-film, how good can the DVD be? |

| The Hound of the Baskervilles (1978) - Released December 7, 2004 Stars: Peter Cook (Sherlock Holmes) and Dudley Moore (Dr. Watson) Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only) Color, Mono, Widescreen Review Notes: Solid but basic DVD release of this uneven and often tasteless comedy. Not for the easily offended, but if you already like the film, it is a decent quality DVD release at a reasonable price. Recommended. |
| The Hound of the Baskervilles (2005) - Released October 2005 Stars: Anthony D. P. Mann (Sherlock Holmes) and William Morrow (Dr. Watson) Region 0 encoding (Worldwide for NTSC display) Color, Stereo, Full Screen Commentary by Anthony D.P. Mann, Audience with A.D.P. Mann, Meet & Greet with Cast, Deleted Scenes, Trailers and Still Gallery Review Notes: No-budget amateur indie film runs 31 minutes, with special features running 1 hour. Shot in Kingston, ON. Creative scripting to solve obvious budget issues, but otherwise pretty awful. Direct distribution through maker's site only will make this a Sherlockian rarity. |
