Symposium November 16 - 18
November 2006: On October 19th the BBC posted a press release indicating that Jonathan Pryce and Bill Paterson will appear as Holmes and Watson in the  Baker Street Irregulars, a new two-part family drama for CBBC and BBC ONE due for broadcast in 2007. The story is to focus on the group of urchins having to solve the mysterious disappearance of two of their own gang, while Holmes himself is accused of murder and put under house arrest. Click here to read the BBC Press Release.
March 2007:  Robert Graham has a report on Vasily Livanov’s recent appearance (January 16, 2007) at the Sherlock Holmes Pub in London to film a segment for NTV's prime-time program "The First Person". For details and photos visit the Sherlock Holmes Society of London site by clicking here. For onsite information on the Russian Sherlock Holmes series starring Vasily Livanov click here. Sadly, one of the truly great Sherlockian actors, Ian Richardson has  unexpectedly passed away in his sleep on February 9, 2007.  The 72-year-old actor had not been ill and was scheduled to begin filming an episode of
Midsomer Murders the following week. Ironically, his most recent role was as the voice of Death for Sky Television’s production of Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather this past Christmas. Generally best known for portraying the scheming Francis Urquhart in the brilliant House of Cards trilogy, Sherlockians will treasure his two outings as Sherlock Holmes in the 1983 telefilms of The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Sign of Four as well as his more recent run as Dr. Joseph Bell in the Murder Rooms series.  A fine actor who will be sorely missed!
June 2007:  Sherlock Holmes And The Baker Street Irregulars is scheduled for a Region 1 MTSC (North America) DVD release in September 2007. Click here to pre-order from Amazon USA now. Originally aired on the BBC in March, the program features Jonathan Pryce as Sherlock Holmes, Bill Paterson as Watson, Mia Fernandez as Sadie, Aaron Johnson as Finch and Anna Chancellor as Irene Adler. A Region 2 PAL (European) DVD has been available since mid-May. So far no word yet on whether or not the superior Reichenbach program from BBC Scotland will be released to DVD anytime soon.

Sherlcokains should clear their schedules for November 2007 as the folks at
Wessex Press will be aiming to re-create the success of their fantastic 2003 symposium by holding From Gillette to Brett II in Indianapolis. Guests for this symposium include Granada series writer Jeremy Paul, Patricia Garwood (Kate Whitney in TWIS),  David Stuart Davies, Scott Allen Nollen, Terence Faherty, Kathryn White and Julie McKuras. For my write-up on the last symposium please click here to see what you missed! For details on From Gillette to Brett II or to register click here to visit the Wessex Press website. Book early as this event is likely to sell out fast... and space is limited!

Coming this Fall are not one, but 2 new biographical books about Arthur Conan Doyle. First out of the gate is Andrew Lycett's
Conan Doyle: The Man Who Created Sherlock Holmes from Weidenfeld and Nicholson in the UK. A US release will follow later 2007. Lycett is a professional biographer who has previously published biographies on Rudyard Kipling and Ian Fleming, to name just a few. To pre-order the UK release from Amazon UK click here. Also in the offing is
Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life in Letters edited by Jon Lellenberg, Daniel Stashower and Charles Foley. Based entirely on previously unpublished private correspondence this volume promises to offer a unique insight into one of the world's most popular authors and bring him out from behind the shadow of his greatest creation, Sherlock Holmes. About the editors: Daniel Stashower is an award-winning mystery novelist, an Edgar Award winner and the recipient of the Raymond Chandler Fulbright Fellowship in Detective and Crime Fiction Writing. He is also the author of Teller of Tales, a widely praised biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Jon Lellenberg is the U.S agent for the Conan Doyle estate and coeditor of a number of anthologies of new Sherlock Holmes stories by mystery writers, as well as the historian of the Baker Street Irregulars. Charles Foley is the great-nephew of Arthur Conan Doyle and great-grandson of Mary Foley Doyle, as well as the present executor of the Conan Doyle Estate. Reichenbach Falls, a curiously named one-off crime drama produced by BBC Scotland, was broadcast March 1, 2007 on BBC Four. Written by James Mavor and based on an original idea by Ian Rankin, Reichenbach Falls has modern-day crime novelist Jack Harvey (Alastair Mackenzie, Monarch Of The Glen) and DI Buchan (Alec Newman, Angel) probe a 100-year-old cold case, the investigation taking them into the dark Jekyll-and-Hyde underworld of Edinburgh and on a parallel journey into the Scottish capital's literary past. Richard Wilson (One Foot in the Grave) appears as Arthur Conan Doyle along with John Sessions as Professor Joseph Bell. No word of a North American broadcast at this time. For further information visit the BBC Press Office by clicking here.

RDF Television’s 2-part production of
Sherlock Holmes And The Baker Street Irregulars has its initial airing on BBC One Sunday, March 18, 2007. The program features Jonathan Pryce as Sherlock Holmes, Bill Paterson as Watson, Mia Fernandez as Sadie, Aaron Johnson as Finch and Anna Chancellor as Irene Adler.

When Sherlock Holmes is called in by Scotland Yard to investigate the mysterious death of one of their detectives, he enlists the help of the Baker Street Irregulars: a rag-tag group of street kids who have learnt to fend for themselves on the harsh streets of London town. However, the Irregulars face a challenge of their own: their leader, Jack, is missing and the gang fears the worst. Jack's sister, Sadie, is determined to find him and the Irregulars have turned to Holmes to help solve the mystery. However, when Sadie also goes missing, it seems a desperate situation.

The plot thickens when Holmes himself is accused of murder and put under house arrest. The IIrregulars must rally together to help Holmes confront an old nemesis, solve the crime and find their missing friends. Finch steps up as leader of the gang and the Irregulars take to the streets in a series of disguises to help solve the mystery and find Jack and Sadie. It's not long before they come across their prime suspect – master criminal Irene Adler. Only by combining all their skills can they hope to free Holmes and prevent what could be the most audacious crime of the century...   Program info courtesy the
BBC Press office.
