The Singular Society of the
Baker Street Dozen

The Sherlock Holmes Society of Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Established January 1987
Who We Are:

The Singular Society of the Baker Street Dozen is composed of a diverse group of Calgary-based adults from all walks of life who have come together to discuss their common interest in Sherlock Holmes and his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

What We Do:

Typically, we meet for story discussion meetings roughly 8 months of the year with 2 additional  purely social functions in December (Christmas Dinner) and June (BBQ). A typical meeting is given over primarily to general discussion of the story at hand, recent films and books of Sherlockian interest, and just about anything else that catches our fancy. A short quiz is also usually provided for the story under discussion. Although we are not a formal group by means and make fun our goal, structured papers and presentations are always welcome.

Occasionally a meeting will be replaced with another outside event. In the past we have visited the
Calgary Police Museum, sponsored a Silver Blaze Race at the track, taken part in an evening of Murder Investigation at the Calgary Police Training facility and have gone to a number of theatrical presentations of Sherlock Holmes plays at local venues.

About Our Name:

In our formative days member turn-out at meetings tended towards 13 or so people which led us to adopt the
Baker Street Dozen element of our name for its similarity to a Bakerís Dozen. The Singular Society element just seemed a natural match and evolved from one of our memberís habit of noting the use of the word Ďsingularí in any given Holmes story. Thus was born The Singular Society of the Baker Street Dozen as our society name.

Meeting Venue:

It has been our habit to rotate meetings between memberís homes on a month-to-month basis, which has been possible due to a typical meeting size of 14 or less. If or when the need arises, we will move to a public venue such as a pub or library to accommodate for size.
